A 90-YEAR-OLD Clare man and his wife, in her early eighties, are in the throes of divorce proceedings in the circuit court, a court has heard.
In a bitter family dispute that goes beyond the couple’s marital break-up and involves the couple’s adult children, the man has obtained a protection order against an adult daughter after he told the court she “threatened to smash my face and I am concerned about my safety”.
In a separate action involving the rural family, the mother has obtained a protection order against a son of the couple who farms land around the family home where the estranged parents live and where he provides support to his father.

An elderly man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal road collision in County Limerick just over a year ago.
James Barrett, 77, who has an address at Glendown Court, Templeogue, Dublin appeared before Newcastle West Court after he was charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Michael (Mickey) Hegarty.
The 47-year-old father-of-two from Rathkeale died following a collision on the N21 outside Croagh, between Rathkeale and Adare on November 27, 2019.
During a brief hearing, Garda Erol Flynn of the divisional Roads Policing Unit said the defendant met gardai by arrangement and that he made no reply when he was formally charged.
The â¬6,000 raised through the 2020 Virtual Donegal Half Marathon will go towards the purchase of equipment for the Acute Stroke Unit at Letterkenny University Hospital.
And in a marvellous act of generosity, the eventâs main sponsors, the Kernan Retail Group, covered the full cost of the purchase of a life-saving defibrillator at Kernanâs, Tullygay, through its partnership with Community Recycling Initiative.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Donegal Half Marathon Ambassador, Danny McDaid, said that while staging a virtual event for the first time this year was challenging, the efforts of the organising committee proved worthwhile.
âWe were sceptical when we met at the start of the summer to discuss the best way to go with the 2020 Donegal Half Marathon. Eventually, we decided to go with a virtual event and it proved a good move. It meant that people could take part in the Donegal Half Marathon anywhere in the world,â he said.
