Birmingham pension system bill causes sharp disagreement in Alabama House
Updated Apr 06, 2021;
The Alabama House approved a bill that would make changes to the pension system for Birmingham city employees after shutting down debate between Jefferson County lawmakers who disagreed on the legislation.
Birmingham legislators who wanted to delay a vote on the bill said it was wrong for representatives from other districts to cut off the discussion.
“You’re telling us we don’t have the right to fight for issues that our constituents have asked us to fight for,” Rep. Mary Moore, D-Birmingham, said.
The bill, by Rep. Allen Treadaway, a Republican from Morris, would increase the contribution employees make to the pension system from 7% to 7.5%. The bill would make other changes that Treadaway and other supporters said would reduce the pension systems’ unfunded liability over time and protect the fund in the long run.
