SALT LAKE CITY – Like all musicians, John Richardson brings his own unique experiences to his job – that of cantor at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. However, his experiences are unusual: Richardson has had little formal music training and, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he faced, in many ways, a steep learning curve when he started working, he said.
Praying the Worldwide Rosary

Participating in the month-long global prayer marathon to end the pandemic has been fascinating, educational and frustrating all at the same time.
A few weeks ago, Pope Francis called for the entire month of May to be dedicated to prayer, with the intention of the end of the coronavirus pandemic. Each day, a different Marian shrine or sanctuary is broadcasting a rosary on YouTube. The Holy Father opened the prayer marathon at St. Peter’s Basilica on May 1, and is scheduled to end it on May 31.

Honoring the Queen of May
Friday, May. 07, 2021
The Luke 2:40 ministry of St. Joseph Parish in Ogden held a May Crowning May 1 in the grotto of St. Florence Mission in Huntsville.
During the month of May, the Blessed Virgin Mary will be honored during various Marian devotions held in the Catholic Church. Many parishes will set aside time for a special rosary, or erect a special May altar. A May crowning also is a popular tradition. Several popes have written about these traditions, including Pope Paul VI in his 1965 encyclical Mense Maio, in which he said, “the person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise.”

One of the seven broken signposts that A.T. Wright studies in his new book Broken Signposts: How Christianity Makes Sense of the World (New York: HarperOne, 2020, $27.99) is spirituality. It is one of the seven signposts that Wright doesn’t think are working in the contemporary world and which he thinks can be healed by embracing the vision that St. John presents in his gospel. I smiled as I read the first couple of sentences in Wright’s chapter on spirituality.
