Young musicians honoured in memory of Eimear Noonan

THE winners of the Eimear Noonan Music Bursary Awards have been announced following a hugely successful virtual Carpe Diem Sing and Play Challenge which raised funds to support the initiative. Sarah Hannify is a violist from Galway and currently studying a BMus at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. She was one of those who received the happy news this month that she was selected as one of two winners of an Award of Excellence for 2020-21. She has been playing the viola since the age of four and has been a dedicated member of numerous local and national orchestras as well as a member of Welsh and Scottish National Youth Orchestras.

Office S&M was founded seven years ago by Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen and is now a firm of four known for its playful projects and experimental approach to materials.
The practice has worked on new-build housing, workspace retrofit and public realm projects for public and private clients.
Its YAYA entry included two jazzy extensions and a £205,000 pistachio-and-pink build-to-rent house that completes a terrace in Newham, east London, with a head-turning flourish.
They say: “By putting an emphasis on being inventive, we find opportunities where others see an obstacle. Joyful design is embedded in our DNA, and we use colour as a building material.”

I took a punt when I entered the AJ’s 40 under 40 in 2005 as my career had been relatively unremarkable. Having walked away from a potential route to partnership at Feilden Clegg Architects to do time on Hopkins’ Manchester Art Gallery and Allies and Morrison’s Royal Festival Hall, I was two years into a 15-year detour from conventional practice. Out of the loop, I had no idea if my contribution to the profession was noteworthy or, for that matter, what noteworthy actually meant.
