They are afraid of what would happen if there was a need for a fire response in their neighbourhood of Beaver Lake, at the western reaches of Greater Sudbury. In fact, Beaver Lake, which is in Ward 2, is closer to Nairn Centre than to many other parts of the Nickel City.

The problem, Salo told The Star, is that a good portion of the Beaver Lake area lies north of Highway 17, along the Spanish River, through Worthington (where Totten Mine is located) and along the shores of Fairbank Lake. The Lake Wabagishik area is also part of Beaver Lake. There are several back roads north of the highway where residents have built their dream homes.

The farmers’ market is celebrating a year of productive results.
The Greater Sudbury Market Association will present their year-end report to the community services committee next week. They say 2020 was a very good year.

It seems the pandemic was good for business. The number of patrons spiked in 2020, basically doubling over 2019 attendance figures.
A total of 17,589 patrons took part in the Thursday market last year, compared to 9,112 in 2019 and 8,808 in 2018. Not surprisingly, vendors were busiest in July and August.

Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Blaine Pedersen announced the 2021-22 fishing season officially opens Saturday, May 15 in the southern division and Saturday, May 22 in the rest of the province.
“Manitobans are fortunate to have an abundance of trophy fisheries located throughout the province,” said Pedersen. “Recreational angling is a fantastic way to spend time with family while enjoying the outdoors.”

Some fish may still be spawning during the start of the angling season. Anglers are asked to protect fish stocks by releasing fish who are discharging eggs back into the water. By proactively releasing spawning fish, anglers will help protect fish stocks and sustain Manitoba’s fisheries.
