Father Paul Jeyamani, pastor of All Saints Parish, knew Portland’s Rose Festival had to do with the city’s fragrant roses and extravagant parades, but that’s where his knowledge ended.

My family never celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at our house. When I got older and realized how Irish I was, I asked my mother why. She said she did not approve of all the drinking and she wanted her children to identify with their English background. Also, my father’s Protestant relatives from Boston were very prejudiced against Irish Catholics; they had a false sense of superiority because their ancestors had settled in Massachusetts starting in 1629. To avoid fights, my mother said as little as possible about being Irish. It was only towards the end of her life that she started to talk more about her Irish heritage, and when I visited Ireland she was very proud of me.

Niskayuna Rowing hauled in nine gold medals in the scholastic division and 13 overall.
The Niskayuna boys’ entries claimed four gold medals Saturday at their second competition in the past 18 months.
“It feels like it’s been a long time,” Niskayuna boys rowing coach Sean O’Brien said. “They spent a great amount of time in small boats over the summer and into the fall, slowly they got to work into some bigger boats, doubles and quads. It was like a technical year, so they are rowing a lot better.”
