Canton special meeting to appoint interim town clerk postponed due to Zoom issue

CANTON — A technical issue postponed a Wednesday morning special meeting for town officials expected to announce the appointment of an interim town clerk. Nearly 30 people had signed on to a Zoom Technologies virtual meeting room shortly after 10 a.m., but town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said the meeting will be rescheduled due to a Zoom link issue that automatically admitted some users and required others to enter a passcode. The meeting agenda included consideration of town elected officials’ health insurance contributions and the appointment of a singular town clerk, tax collector, registrar of vital statistics and marriage officer to fulfill the remaining year of retiring Town Clerk Lisa A. Hammond’s term.

Canton Municipal Building now closed to public access due to increase of COVID cases

Thursday, December 17, 2020 - 9:27 am CANTON The Town and Village of Canton have announced that the Municipal Building at 60 Main Street will be closed to unrestricted public access beginning Thursday, Dec. 17. “We are taking this precaution due to the rise in COVID cases in the community,” says Mayor Michael Dalton. “The goal is to reduce exposure caused by people moving in and of the building.” Town and Village offices will remain staffed; appointments may be made by calling the Town Clerk’s office at 315-386-3735 or the Village Clerk’s office at 315-386-2871 extension 1. A dropbox for municipal offices is located in the foyer of the building for all correspondence and payments (it is monitored by closed-circuit security cameras).

Canton town attorney to send letter to DEC to clear up sewer system question following fine threat

Wednesday, December 16, 2020 - 5:24 pm BY ADAM ATKINSON North Country This Week CANTON Attorneys for the town of Canton will be sending a reply letter to the state Department of Environmental Conservation notifying the agency that there are no publicly owned sewer systems in the town. The DEC recently sent a notice to the town to register what it believes is a publicly owned sewer system or face a fine of more than $37,000 per day until it is registered. Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley told the board at their meeting Dec. 10 that, after conferring with the town codes department and the village department of public works, she had contacted the DEC after receiving the notice to tell them that the town does not operate such a system.

Retiring town clerk, outgoing justice honored by Canton town board

We wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors,” Ashley said.
