Victoria Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas has warned the state's agriculture industry “backpackers are not coming back any time soon” as growers struggle to find a new seasonal harvesting workforce.
Ms Thomas noted the pandemic had revealed the horticulture industry was “over-reliant on overseas” workers and said the Andrews government had adopted a multipronged approach to dealing with the problem.
More than $76 million has been diverted to programs designed to aid growers, attract a local workforce and bring some overseas workers into the country.
As her Vernview Orchard at Launching Place welcomed some of the first overseas farm workers returning to the state, Ms Finger has warned the industry needs to re-think how it sources labour during peak harvest periods.
Six workers from Vanuatu have arrived at Vernview in the Yarra Valley and they are among the first group of 200 from Pacific islands that has arrived in Victoria after quarantining in Tasmania.
Eventually, farms in the state will welcome 1,500 Pacific workers under the deal struck between the Victorian and Tasmanian governments.

While the workers are welcome, Ms Finger warns they are not enough and says the industry needs to look at its use of migrant labour.
Pacific Island workforce to aid Victorian growers reeling from backpacker loss 06/04/2021|4min
Victorian Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas has welcomed the first laborers who have arrived to pick fruit under the Pacific Islander worker mobility scheme as growers reel from the loss of the backpacker workforce.
Under a deal with the Tasmanian government Victoria will see 1,500 Pacific Island workers complete two weeks in the southern island state’s hotel quarantine facilities before traveling to the mainland to harvest crops.
Mr Thomas described the scheme which has already seen 200 workers enter the state as a “great program” which benefited both farmers and workers.
