Rally, counter protest planned at Oregon Capitol on New Year s Day KATU Staff

SALEM, Ore. – Oregon State Police are preparing for a protest against coronavirus pandemic restrictions at the Capitol on New Year’s Day, which is expected to be met with counter-protesters.
According to social media posts, there s a Mass Civil Disobedience Rally set for 1 p.m. with a potential march to the governor’s residence, Mahonia Hall.
Those behind the rally say they are “done with the ridiculous shut downs of businesses, schools, people s livelihoods” and what they call “the phony mask mandate.”

The Salem Police Department is aware of several protests that are planned in our community on Friday, January 1, 2021. These protests may impact areas and city streets near the Oregon State Capitol, Bush’s Pasture Park and Mahonia Hall. The Salem Police Department, in partnership with the Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, will have resources including patrol, crowd management teams and SWAT officers to monitor and manage the protests as they unfold.

Suspicious package outside transit center found to be empty backpack
UPDATE at 10:50 a.m.
The suspicious package found this morning at the downtown transit center was found to be an empty backpack by Salem Police, according to officials.
Downtown streets have reopened to regular traffic in the area.
Cherriots will be resuming regular service from the downtown transit center with 11 a.m. departures.

Several downtown streets are closed as the Salem police bomb squad responds to a suspicious package found outside the transit center Thursday morning.
The report of an abandoned bag led to the evacuation of the ground floor of the Salem Transit Center, said Salem police Lt. Treven Upkes.
