SANTA MONICA On Tuesday, March 9, the Santa Monica City Council approved a second permit-based Shared Mobility Pilot Program and cleared the use of Class I and II electric bikes on Santa Monica’s portion of the beach bike path.
Shared mobility services are a transportation option where devices like bikes and electric scooters are shared among users. They are typically enabled by a mobile app, and emerging services are usually run by private companies.
“We’ve always taken a flexible approach to shared mobility given how quickly the industry and community needs shift,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “What has not changed is the value these devices bring in offering residents and visitors a convenient, accessible alternative to cars that can reduce vehicle congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Santa Monica is committed to safe, sustainable, and affordable transportation, and these values will guide the second pilot and future contracting process.”
Santa Monica receives over $5.5 million for affordable housing developments

Santa Monica, a leader in affordable housing production, recently received $5.5 million in funding from two California Department of Housing and Community Development grants.
This money will go towards three housing projects targeting at risk youth, people experiencing homelessness and elderly individuals.
“Affordable housing, always a precious resource, has become even more necessary as greater numbers of our community suffer the financial hardships brought on by the pandemic,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “We thank HCD for this much appreciated contribution to our affordable housing trust fund that will offer stability to Santa Monicans.”
Despite a decade of discussions, proposals, consultations and feasibility studies, it seems more study needs to be done regarding the Dalle Parc south of the Falaise Saint-Jacques.
The Dalle Parc will span some 50 acres with a link for pedestrians and cyclists in the space cleared by the reconstruction of the Turcot interchange and yards.
Provincial transport minister Chantal Rouleau called it âa great project that will greatly improve the quality of life of Montrealers,â and Quebec City agreed to help defray half of the $238,000 cost of two feasibility studies on the park that were carried out in 2019 and 2020. But no action is actually planned yet to begin its construction, nor are any financials in place.
