An online Book of Condolence is to be opened by Derry City and Strabane District Council in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore.
The 100-year-old, who helped raised more than £30million for the health service last year through a fundraising walk around his garden, died earlier today after contracting Covid-19.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Brian Tierney, has expressed his sadness at the news.
Adding his voice to the many who offered their sympathies to Captain Tom s family today, Mayor Tierney said he had achieved a remarkable thing when he lifted the spirits of the world with his kindness.
Appeal for those in financial crisis to seek advice
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Brian Tierney, has appealed to anyone struggling with debt or anxiety due to the impact of Covid19 to please pick up the phone and seek assistance from the network of support services available locally.
Local advice services have now been extended to meet the increasing demand for information and advice through the Covid-19 Financial Inclusion Partnership Fund. Council’s advice service partners at Advice North West, Dove House and the Resource Centre have all stepped up to deliver a specially tailored programme of support through the Financial Inclusion Project, supported by the Department for Communities, to meet the immediate financial and debt needs of local people who are juggling finances to keep families afloat.

Mayor issues plea to stay at home as new COVID regulations to be enforced
Mayor of Derry and Strabane Brian Tierney has pleaded with local people to only leave home for essential reasons following the latest spike in Covid 19 cases in the Council area.

Mayor Tierney warned that there is a genuine risk of the health service being overwhelmed if the public don’t adhere to the now legally enforceable guidance issued by the NI Executive this week.
From midnight on Thursday people across the north have been warned they should only leave home for medical or food needs, exercise and work that cannot be done from home.

Pupils at a Derry college which has won a prestigious educational award have spoken of their pride and joy at the school winning the accolade.
St Cecilia’s College was recently selected from thousands of nominations as one of the UK s most inspirational schools, winning a Pearson National Teaching Gold Award.
