A Sacramento City Council vote next week will decide the fate of overnight shelters for the region s homeless population.
After two homeless people died in the brutal winter storms a month ago, council members decided to require overnight shelters to open when temperatures get below 32 degrees. Now, they will decide whether to eliminate the weather criteria, and keep shelters open year-round. In a letter to the Sacramento Bee, Mayor Darrell Steinberg is urging council members to approve the initiative.

The City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to transfer the remaining $323,000 of a $1 million emergency homelessness response fund to the city’s motel voucher program.
City Manager Howard Chan and Mayor Darrell Steinberg clarified that the transfer does not take money away from operations at the city’s existing warming centers, which are funded and scheduled to remain open through March 31.
