LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Six candidates have filed paperwork to enter the race for Laurel mayor as the deadline for filing qualifying papers approached Friday evening.
Incumbent Mayor Johnny Magee is seeking his third term in office, but he will have a crowded field of challengers.
According to the Laurel City Clerk, the following people have qualified for the race as of 4:30 p.m. Friday:

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee says heâs seeking a third term in office.
Magee has held the position since being elected in 2013. He says in his two terms, he and his administration have seen consistent growth in the City Beautiful, and he hopes to be able to continue serving the city.
âOur population has grown. Our assessed value on properties in the City of Laurel has grown. Our sales tax has grown. Our tourism tax has grown. Our ad valorem tax has grown. The size of the city has grown,â Magee said. âThings are moving in the City of Laurel. We are growing by leaps and bounds. We have spent millions of dollars on streets and infrastructure, and that continues right now.â

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee proclaimed January as Sanctity of Human Life month during a ceremony held on the steps of the Jones County Courthouse in Laurel on Friday.
A crowd gathered to hear speeches by city leaders and representatives from the Choices Clinic of Laurel.
Executive director Brittany Sherman said the Choices Clinic provides a variety of services for women.
“This is our 25th year as an organization. We have offered medical services for the past five years, and we’re really seeing a lot of growth with that free ultrasound. Mothers are able to see their babies, and we want to share with them that they do have choices other than abortion,” Sherman said.
