Some Phoenix residents are pushing city leaders to do more to add trees and shade.
Phoenix is partnering with the nation’s oldest conservation nonprofit to achieve what the group calls “tree equity” by 2030.
The nonprofit American Forests describes tree equity as making sure all neighborhoods get the benefits trees provide. Through a memorandum of understanding with Phoenix, the group will focus on growing urban forests in heat vulnerable communities, including Councilmember Carlos Garcia’s district.
“We know heat does not affect everyone equally,” he said during Wednesday’s council meeting. “Some south Phoenix neighborhoods are 10 degrees hotter than those in central Phoenix or in other places.”

PHOENIX Firefighters were called to the scene of a raging gas fire early Sunday morning and were met with giant flames, the Phoenix Fire Department said.
Crews were dispatched to the scene near the 7th Street bridge just south of University to reports of flames and smoke coming from under the street, the department said.
The firefighters were met with 20 and 30-foot flames that were fed by a 10-inch main gas line that somehow ruptured, the department said.

PHOENIX 12 News has uncovered new details into the investigation of a Phoenix police officer that allegedly threatened Mayor Kate Gallego.
It’s been months since the October incident, but no charges have been filed.
Phoenix police officer Steven Poulos is accused of threatening Mayor Gallego’s life. A police report obtained by 12 News says the threatening comments were allegedly made at a squad briefing on Oct. 12.
