Police had been at the Maplewood apartment of a 70-year-old mother to check on her hours before they found her dead Monday afternoon and a second man may have been involved in her killing, court records obtained by NJ Advance Media show.
Benjamin Avrut, 35, was charged with murder in the death of his mother, Gwen Arvut, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday morning. Court records indicate that her son was possibly looking for money for drugs at the time.

Employee at Maplewood cell phone store shoots suspected robber

MAPLEWOOD, Mo. An employee shot a man who tried to rob a store in Maplewood Wednesday evening.
According to the Maplewood Police Department police chief, there was an attempted hold up at the Boost Mobile at 7222 Manchester Rd. around 6:15 p.m.
Police say the Boost Mobile employee was alone when the man came in with a gun. The employee was able to pull out his own gun and shoot the suspect. The clerk was unhurt.
