Maple School Board tweaks handbook to address spring break travel

Maple staff would have to cover that time with their own sick leave, per the revision made Monday. The extended emergency paid sick leave offered by the district to staff who need to quarantine at home due to COVID-19 exposure could not be used. The revision applies only to international travel to level 4 countries, which as of Wednesday, Feb. 10, included all but a handful of countries, according to a CDC map. It does not apply to travel within the United States, even though the United States is listed as a level 4 country. The board also approved a change to its COVID-19 mask protocol. A doctor’s note will now be required to exempt students or staff from wearing a mask in school. The revision would not affect students and staff who have current exemptions; they would be grandfathered in.

(Courtesy of the PSC) Broadband access in Wisconsin is essential. That’s the message Gov. Tony Evers sent during his State of the State address Jan. 12. “This pandemic has underscored and in some ways, exacerbated the digital divide that exists across our state,” he said. “This pandemic has shown us firsthand that lack of access to high-speed internet continues to be a setback for kids, families and businesses across our state.”

Locally, voters will decide representation for few seats. Only one of five city council races in Superior is facing a challenge this year after long-time Councilor Esther Dalbec decided not to seek another term. “I decided I’m giving it up this year,” Dalbec said. “I think I’ve reached the point at 87 that to get out in the middle of a snowstorm and having to use the telephone for meetings just isn’t the same.”

Solon Springs plans return to on-site learning

The district made the move to all-online classes Nov. 16 amidst a surge in positive COVID-19 cases in Douglas County. The decision to return to in-person classes is based in part on lower county case numbers and the fact that, according to both local and state officials, transmission rates appear to be low in schools. “The county is very consistent with its feedback that school is the safest place for kids to be in COVID times,” said Frank Helquist, district administrator told school board members Dec. 21. Although the district plans to resume in-person classes, he said, they will remain flexible, keeping all instruction options on the table moving forward.
