Barnacle Historic State Park 3485 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove 305-442-6866 Only steps from CocoWalk and the bustling restaurants and shops of Coconut Grove’s entertainment district, Barnacle Historic State Park is the location of the oldest home still in its original location to be built in Miami-Dade. It also happens to be one of the more secluded, quieter parks to discover on one’s own, as the winding, canopied entryway leads to a grassy lawn with a head-on view of Biscayne Bay. Built by Ralph Middleton Munroe, a 20th-century settler of the area who fought off developers seeking to build artificial islands offshore and engineers who wished to pipe raw sewage into the bay, the passion project of a man who loved yachts and boats and, most of all, his Grove home, continues to be enjoyed by visitors today.

Matthew Roy wrote to the editor (“NECEC ‘critical’ for economy, infrastructure,” March 27) soliciting support for the wildly unpopular Central Maine Power corridor. He cited financial gain for the city of Lewiston as the reason he feels CMP deserves our support. I totally disagree with his view.
I think we can all appreciate our city’s need for tax revenue; however, this project has devastating implications that go far beyond our city. As Mainers, we need to realize the great benefit of our wilderness for both environmental reasons and especially for our tourist industry. Not to mention the wildlife that will be harmed with pesticides that are sprayed under the poles all along the corridor to keep vegetation from growing.
WATERTOWN â Attorneys for the city and former Parks and Recreation Superintendent Erin E. Gardner will meet Wednesday to see if they can come up with a settlement before two complaints she filed with the stateâs Division of Human Rights move forward.
Ms. Gardner has filed two complaints with the state Division of Human Rights against the city. The human rights commission has found âprobable causeâ in both of them.
The attorneys will meet Wednesday during the âpre-settlement hearing conferenceâ to see if they can agree to settle matters before a hearing is scheduled to see if the cases should proceed and be investigated.
