Connecticut brothers receive Carnegie Medals for icy water rescue of a man and his dog Isabella Chan, Hartford Courant
It was a cold day at Lake Mohegan when Jonathan Goldfarb and his family took a stroll along the water in December 2019. His older brother, Matthew Goldfarb, was visiting from out of town for the holidays and for a moment, it was just a casual family walk. But then they heard the cries for help coming from the water.
According to Fairfield Police, a 24-year-old man and his girlfriend were walking their dog near Lake Mohegan at the same time. The dog ran out onto the ice and fell into the water; the man attempted to rescue his dog and swam into the deep water, despite its extremely cold temperature. His girlfriend began to yell for help as her partner struggled to return to shore, repeatedly submerging in the freezing water.
