I refer to Ian Pickles’ letter, titled ‘Developers’ power’ (Letters, 10 February).
Generally, I must agree with most of what Ian wrote in his letter, but I want to point out two glaring errors.
Firstly, the NSW Government Standard Instrument does NOT require multi-dwelling housing be permissible in the R2 Low Density Residential Zone. Including multi-dwelling housing in the R2 zone as permissible continues to be a purely voluntary decision by Byron Council.
Secondly, one has only to read the old
Byron Development Control Plan (DCP) 2010 Chapter 1 Part C – Residential Development and compare it to the current Byron Local Environment Plan (LEP) 2014 and DCP 2014 to see that the planning provisions under Jan Barham and past Green councils were far less permissive of overdevelopment, and put more restrictions in place, which benefited the wider community and neighbours.

As developers eagerly continue to monetise Byron Shire’s property market, the flip side of course is the cost to the community and the region’s unique biodiversity.
Yet despite those pressures, Greens Mayor Simon Richardson is yet to reply to questions around his commitment to protecting both the environment and amenity of residents. Mute mayor: questions around Council’s commitment to protecting the community from inappropriate development remain unanswered by Mayor Simon Richardson. Photo David Hancock.
Last week,
The Echo reported on yet another loss by Byron Shire Council in the NSW Land & Environment court, something which the mayor once boasted was a rare event.
The Rush Hour in Adelaide, alongside his
Dead Set Legends co-hosts Andrew Jarman (Jars) and Bernie Vince.
The show will go to air on Triple M Adelaide from 6pm to 7pm on weekdays from Monday.
In addition to his international Test and One-Day cricket career, Blewett has been heard on Triple M’s weekend
Dead Set Legends show since 2018 with Jarman and Vince.
Jarman had hosted
The Rush Hour with former AFL player Dale Lewis, however he was replaced by Vince, also a former AFL star, last year.
Blewett said it doesn’t get much better than his new appointment.
