THE BUZZ REALITY BITES, PART II: It’s been a rough couple of weeks since Caitlyn Jenner made the official move from reality TV star to gubernatorial candidates. And, it’s brutal out there especially for a newcomer TV star who wants to jump into the piranha pond of CA politics. Because it means constantly confronting one thing that doesn’t exist in reality TV: fact-checking.
Ryan McMahon has always had fairly high upside since coming out of Southern California’s powerhouse Mater Dei High School in 2013. With his balanced swing and athletic six-foot-two-inch frame, there wasn’t much the youngster couldn’t do. Although, there was always the question of his plate discipline as he continued to face better pitching.
Fast forward to 2020, and McMahon’s high strikeout rate of 34.2% led to a disappointing shortened third year. To be successful, McMahon would need to drastically cut down on the strikeouts and whiffs and regain his ability to hit a breaking pitch. Would he be able to make those adjustments in 2021?
“That position on the field creates the majority of the excitement, whether it’s through the passing or the running or the scoring,” says Loyal SC manager Landon Donovan. “It’s a legendary number that just grows and grows and grows and that’s why you see the best players in the world wear it.”
Today the 10 has moved beyond being position-specific. It’s a number that’s earned by the greatest or most important player on a club. In their inaugural year, San Diego Loyal SC didn’t have anyone wear 10, and that was by design.
“I wanted to take my time, very intentionally, to make sure the right person was wearing it at the right time,” says Donovan.
