CONCORD, N.C. (News Release) – After more than a year-long delay due to COVID-19, it will have been 579 days since the NHRA’s top drivers last visited zMAX Dragway when they fire up their 11,000-horsepower engines on Friday, for the first of three days of nitro-fueled action at this weekend’s NGK NTK NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. Despite the layoff, there is no shortage of intriguing storylines to watch as fans head back to the Bellagio of drag strips.
The final weekend at Atlanta Dragway has arrived and that means all the stars of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will try to grab the historic last win at the 40th and final Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals.
It’s also the first race in Atlanta since 2019 for most of the classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while Pro Stock will be making its first appearance at Georgia’s House of Speed since 2018. Nearly all drivers have some sort of memory at Atlanta Dragway, whether it was picking up a noteworthy victory or taking part in a memorable weekend. But everyone racing this weekend will have a takeaway by competing in the final event at the track. Only four, though, will leave with the Wally at the final appearance in Atlanta, a moment that will go down in history. Tyler Shaw leaned back in his chair and let the announcement sink in.
He had just been named as Little Dixie Fire Protection District’s Firefighter of the Year for 2020 and accepted the award with his son Lucas by his side.
“It means quite a bit to me,” Shaw said after Saturday night’s awards dinner, held at the 4-H Center in Mexico.
The district took the opportunity to recognize Shaw and 10 others at the annual event. Normally scheduled for fall, the banquet had been put on hold by the pandemic.
Fire Chief Bill Albus explained that COVID-19 made 2020 a difficult year. Regular training sessions were postponed or cancelled, and that led to a waiting list of volunteers.
