PlanetSail OnCourse Episode 12: A Man on a Mission

PlanetSail: A man on a mission © PlanetSail It started off as a tour aboard a 70ft tri that had just set a blistering pace offshore, but when I met the owner of PowerPlay the story suddenly became more about him than his boat. Peter Cunningham has owned PowerPlay for 5 years and has been aboard for pretty much all of the record breaking runs. Nothing strange in that, except Peter is about to turn 80. His is an extraordinary tale as I discovered. We also talk to another extraordinary offshore sailor, Dee Caffari as she takes on a new challenge in the UK s first double handed offshore series. Plus, record breaking for the rest of us is now a reality, the Ocean Race Europe prepares to kick off and this episode sees another double helping of Docktalk.

Norfolk Aggie panel asks super finalists how they d heal school

Mary Ellen Gambon Special to the Journal & Sun Two finalists were interviewed April 14 to replace outgoing Norfolk County Agricultural High School Superintendent Tammy Quinn. School officials interviewed John Martin and Robert Gerardi Jr. for the position at county-run Aggie, one of the few agricultural schools in the state. The superintendent s office has not returned calls to say if it has made a final decision on a new super.  The school, known as an institution where students who fall behind in a traditional school setting can flourish, has faced a series of challenges this year that the new leader will have to tackle: the ramifications of COVID-19; the February vote of no confidence in its board of trustees by its teachers union; and concerns about the installation of a solar array by Kearsage Energy, LLC on school land that has been used to grow hay to feed farm animals.

The Superyacht Cup Palma s landmark anniversary attracts new and familiar faces

SY Ravenger - Superyacht Cup Palma © Claire Matches / www.clairematches.com The 25th anniversary of the Superyacht Cup Palma is shaping up to be a landmark celebration of Europe s longest running superyacht regatta. With the new-look event fully focused on the racing from 23-26 June, the prospect of top-level competition on the Bay of Palma has attracted an inspiring degree of interest featuring the return of regular participants alongside no fewer than three first-time entries. As ever, SYC attracts entries from across the superyacht spectrum, with the trio of debutantes in 2021 no exception. The high-performance Shamanna is a striking 35m Frers-designed Nautor Swan 115 FD and she will be joined by Umiko, a representative of the iconic Swan 80 range also from the Nautor stable, and the 43m Ravenger (ex Sea Eagle) another stunning example from Royal Husiman, also making it a Frers clean sweep on the design front.

PlanetSail OnCourse Episode 11: Could the America s Cup come to Britain?

PlanetSail OnCourse Episode 11 © PlanetSail In the end, the successful defence of the America s Cup didn t come as a surprise. As the last few races played out it became increasingly clear that the home team had a much faster boat. What did come as a shock was the talk of what might happen next for the Cup. When the official statement was released by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (Defenders) and the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes (Challenger of Record) there were plenty of raised eyebrows. Matt Sheahan matches rumour to fact to assess what might happen next for the America s Cup and whether the trophy that started life in the Solent 170 years ago really could be run in the UK next time around.
