Former Collingwood recruiter Matt Rendell still believes the Magpies can contend as soon as next year if they commit to a fresh start.
The Magpies sit 17th on the ladder after seven rounds having just lost to Gold Coast on the MCG.
Rendell last week called for the club to move on from coach Nathan Buckley and has doubled down, saying he wouldn’t trade away key players because a fresh start with a new coach is all the list needs to get back into the finals mix.
The club tipped to morph into a clone of Richmond

Former AFL recruiter Matt Rendell is extremely impressed with Essendonâs system and the improvement of certain players.
The Bombers finished the stronger to beat Collingwood by 24 points on Anzac Day with midfielder Darcy Parish (42 disposals) starring in his best game for the club.
Injuries forced coach Ben Rutten to shuffle his pack with Jayden Leverde moved into defence, Parish into an inside midfield role and Cale Hooker deployed as a permanent forward.
All three moves have paid off and Rendell sees glimpses of Richmond in the way Essendon are structuring up and their willingness to work for each other.
Why Matt Rendell can t see Nathan Buckley coaching Collingwood next year

Former Collingwood recruiter Matt Rendell can’t see Nathan Buckley coaching the side beyond 2021.
The Pies coach told reporters on Tuesday that he did have the desire to coach on beyond this season, while the club has stated that a decision would be made at the end of the season.
Speaking on
SEN’s Dwayne’s World, Rendell said he believes the Magpies haven’t recovered tactically from the loss of Justin Longmuir from their coaching ranks and Buckley had to take some responsibility for that.
“At the end of 2017 they do the review and the review basically came out as ‘Nathan, you’ve got to let people do their jobs, you can’t control everything’, Rendell said.
