ATLANTA (AP) Kyle Pitts did his best to sound like any other rookie just trying to fit in, even though he knows he s expected to play a high-profile role from his first game with the Atlanta Falcons.
Modesty goes over well for a rookie, even one of the top selections in the NFL draft.
Copied!
When Arthur Smith spoke for the first time in his introductory press conference after being hired as Atlanta s new head coach, he identified the three staples of his program: Toughness, accountability and competition.
Smith and his coaching staff will enforce competition at every position and the Falcons offensive line will be a position group that will has several battles heading into the 2021 season. Left tackle, right guard and right tackle are the only three spots that have a player who started every game at the position returning. Center and left guard are two spots along the offensive line that have yet to solidify a starter.

As Giants general manager Dave Gettleman gets showered with praise for becoming “Trader Dave” in the NFL Draft, it feels like ages ago that he received some of his harshest criticism for a trade he made toward the end of 2019.
The Giants were 2-6 at the 2019 trade deadline when Gettleman sent two draft picks (third-round pick in 2020, conditional fourth in 2021) to the Jets for defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who was set to become a free agent that offseason.
The Atlanta Falcons have some high-end talent on their roster. There’s no question there. There are, though, some holes.
General managers and head coaches always preach the middle class and back end of the roster. That’s where the depth is important. That’s where the Falcons have a lot of possible problems at a lot of positions. The Falcons have 55 players on their roster. Five of those players are specialists – six depending on how one views Cordarrelle Patterson which means Atlanta has a lot of spots to fill and not a lot of money to do it with as it straddles the salary cap line. So the draft, where Atlanta has nine selections, is going to be key.
