ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. New York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated and having previously contracted the coronavirus during the offseason.
That was not immediately clear.
Even though several players across M.L.B. have been reluctant to be vaccinated, the Yankees had been enjoying relaxed health and safety protocols under rules negotiated by M.L.B. and the players’ union for reaching a threshold at which 85 percent of the team’s players and key personnel were fully vaccinated. In fact, Boone said on Thursday that the Yankees had very few people who weren’t vaccinated.
The rewards included, among other things, allowing the team to go without masks in the dugout and the bullpen, along with indoor dining and having visitors at the team hotel. The Yankees were growing more comfortable with this semblance of normal life but had reverted to stricter mask wearing and more distancing since the outbreak began.

Reggie Willits, and four members of the Yankees’ traveling staff were the ones that have tested positive. All eight are currently in quarantine.
All Yankee players and coaching staff members were given the Johnson & Johnson vaccine back on April 7, but not all received the same shot from the same batch.
Out of everyone that tested positive,
Coach Nevin is the only one that has shown symptoms, but is said to be feeling better now.

New York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres tested positive for COVID-19, the team confirmed Thursday afternoon. Torres is the 8th member of the Yankees organization to test positive this week, this after being fully vaccinated and previously having been diagnosed the virus in the offseason. The other positive cases were also from those who were fully vaccinated.
Torres was kept out of Wednesday night’s starting lineup at Tampa Bay as a precaution, and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list on Thursday. Pitching coach Matt Blake, third base coach Phil Nevin and first base coach Reggie Willits were among those who tested positive for the virus, along with a couple additional staff members had positive tests confirmed on Wednesday. The majority of those who have tested positive are asymptomatic.

The New York Yankees on Thursday said an eighth fully vaccinated member of the team has tested positive for COVID-19. MLB and the New York State Department of Health are assisting the team with the outbreak, the team said in a statement.
The team said Thursday that shortstop Gleyber Torres, who is fully vaccinated, tested positive for the virus and was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. They said he previously contracted the virus during the offseason.
Three coaches Matt Blake, Phil Nevin, and Reggie Willits have also tested positive, along with four members of the team s traveling staff. All of the positives are breakthrough positives, occurring with individuals who were fully vaccinated, the statement said.
