The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has said the AstraZeneca vaccine currently being used in Ghana to vaccinate people against COVID-19, is safe despite reports that it is causing blood clots in some people in Europe, which has led to its suspension in 14 European countries, 12 of them being members of the EU.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has declared 2021 a year of “winning public confidence through accountability, integrity and teamwork”.
It said the decision was in line with fulfilling its mandate of protecting public health and safety as enjoined by the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko, who said this, added that “the FDA is the state institution mandated to ensure the protection of public health and safety”.
In a Webinar dubbed: “Winning public confidence through integrity, accountability and teamwork”, the CEO explained that the authority had the responsibility of registering all products within its purview.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved the emergency use of AstraZeneca as COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria.
AstraZeneca, from India, is one of the two vaccines received by Nigeria and forwarded to NAFDAC for scientific study.
The other one, Sputnik, developed by Russia, is still being studied by the agency.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, at a press conference yesterday Abuja said the agency had evaluated the safety and efficacy of the vaccine for Nigerians.
She said the vaccine could be stored in two to eight degrees Centigrade, adding that three more vaccines are being evaluated.
