GALLATIN COUNTY â On Monday morning, the Gallatin City-County Board of Health voted 7-2 to extend the emergency face covering rule until May 27.
âIâm hopeful that we will be able to rescind it sooner but I donât want it to be a situation where we are left out of a mask mandate when we actually really need one,â said Christopher Coburn, board member.
Health Officer Matt Kelley reported COVID-19 cases in Gallatin County were trending upward since the last meeting and told board members he recommended keeping the mask rule.

While numbers of new COVID-19 cases have declined in the state and in this part of north-central Montana in recent months, the disease has not gone away, with Hill County reporting its 43rd COVID-19-related death and four new cases Monday and the state’s governor catching the disease as new cases creep up in some parts of the state. Hill County Health Department reported the death and new cases in a release Monday afternoon. Prior to that, Blaine, Chouteau, Hill and Liberty counties had listed no active cases in any of the counties.

BOZEMAN – Montana State University’s Center for Science, Technology, Ethics and Society will host a free interactive event at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, focusing on understanding the factors that lead to vaccine hesitancy, what can be done to address it and the state of COVID-19 vaccinations in Gallatin County.
“Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy and COVID Vaccination in Montana” will feature Maya Goldenberg, an author of a recent book on vaccine hesitancy and a professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and Matt Kelley, the outgoing Gallatin County public health officer. A Q&A will follow both of the presentations. No pre-registration is necessary for the event, which is free and open to the public. Participants can connect to the Webex event from the STES webpage at
