Stone of Remembrance moved to Australian War Memorial Western Courtyard
The Stone of Remembrance has been moved to the Western Courtyard of the Australian War Memorial as part of the early works for the Memorial’s Development Project.
The Stone, weighing six-and-a-half tonnes, was carefully relocated from the front of the Memorial on Tuesday 13 July and has been temporarily placed on a plinth in the Western Courtyard which will be the centre of commemorative events and ceremonies for the next three years.
It was moved by heritage stonework contractors using specialised equipment under the supervision of the Memorial’s National Collection staff with experience in moving complex and significant objects.

Veterans’ Affairs Minister Andrew Gee has revealed he sought a briefing on the redevelopment of the Australian War Memorial days after being appointed to federal cabinet, sparked in part by strong community opposition to the half-billion-dollar project.
Mr Gee replaced dumped veterans’ minister Darren Chester after last month’s Nationals leadership spill. His move to switch support to Barnaby Joyce was critical to the ouster of former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack.
The Australian War Memorial’s Anzac Hall is being demolished to make way for a larger exhibition building.

Henry Davis goes No. 1
• Davis is only the seventh catcher in history to be drafted No. 1 overall. He s also only the second in the past 20 years, but the second in the last three (Adley Rutschman, 2019). Before Davis and Rutschman, the last catcher drafted No. 1 overall was Joe Mauer in 2001.
• Davis is the first Louisville player to go No. 1 overall in school history. The previous high for a Cardinals player was Brendan McKay at No. 4 in 2017. Davis is also the second Louisville catcher taken in the first round in the last six Drafts Will Smith went No. 32 overall to the Dodgers in 2016.
