But all that, as I say, was before I met John Doyle, before I perched in the gilded opulence of his Ottawa penthouse, and found myself fixed by the wag of a manicured Doyle finger, startled by the bite of a normally soft Doyle voice, which rasped: “Whatever you write about me, goddam it, don’t call me a goddam fugitive from justice.”
