Country Scene: COVID-19 walloped country music in 2020

Wading through a never-ending cesspool of tragic events that surrounded country music over the past 12 months, last week I mentally started formulating a year-in-review story. When the COVID-19 pandemic caused the IHSA and NCAA to cancel high school and college basketball championship tournaments in March, the music world quickly followed. All live performances were immediately halted, from solo gigs at the corner bar to sold-out mega-festivals. The seriousness of the disease got ugly quickly. On March 29, Joe Diffie died from COVID complications. He was just 61 and two months earlier had performed at the Marion Cultural & Civic Center. In a chilling flash, “The Pickup Man” was gone.

The music that got these Bostonians through 2020

The music that got these Bostonians through 2020 By James Sullivan Globe correspondent,Updated December 28, 2020, 3:53 p.m. Email to a Friend YolaWilly Sanjuan/Invision/AP If music is what feelings sound like, then here’s hoping you had more than your share of music in your life this year. Because we were all up in our feelings. Whether it was that one certain song, a beloved old album as comforting as mashed potatoes, or a playlist that matched your frustration or lifted you out of it, you probably had a few musical go-tos specific to 2020. One guy I know immersed himself in the transcendental kind of jazz. As questions go, “why?” got a good workout this year, and the spiritual descendants of John Coltrane would like some answers.
