Man with gun hidden in underwear gets arrested in Decatur, police report

DECATUR — A Decatur man who made “furtive movements” when he was stopped at a police roadside safety check Saturday night went on to arouse  suspicions even more when he was asked to get out of his vehicle, a sworn affidavit said. “.So he got out of the car and stayed partially bent over,” said State Police Trooper Ronald Tisdale who was manning the check area at the intersection of U.S. 51 and King Street. “Based on my training and experience, this is consistent with someone attempting to hide contraband in and around their crotch and waist.” The contraband turned out to be a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine. Tisdale said the gun was loaded with a round in the chamber.

The sentence was the maximum Judge Jason M. Bohm could impose at the Macon County Circuit Court sentencing hearing. Wiley had been convicted in a March jury trial of two counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition. The background of how Wiley, 33, came to be a felon is complex, and also full of weapons offenses. An earlier trial in December of 2019 found him guilty on three charges involving the aggravated unlawful use of a shotgun, rifle and handgun.

Macon County Jail deals with COVID outbreaks; staff glad none of them serious

DECATUR — Corrections staff at the Macon County Jail said they’ve had to deal with a recent spike on COVID-19 infections, but expressed relief that no prisoners became seriously ill. The jail, which divides inmates up among 27 different housing units, said that 19 out of 22 people in one unit had caught the virus. “We quarantined them for 14 days and they just came off quarantine Saturday,” said Sgt. Scott Flannery, the assistant jail superintendent. “And we have zero cases currently.” Flannery said one of the infected inmates had complained of feeling sick but no one had needed treatment in the jail’s medical isolation units.
