REGINA Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League players have been in limbo ever since their season was paused in November 2020. Now, with a decision about return to play approval on the horizon, players are ready for some certainty after almost 12 months of navigating restrictions, pauses and cancellations. Zach Cain, an 18 year-old forward on the Melville Millionaires, was gearing up for his first full SJHL season in 2020-21. The Pilot Butte-born winger said the league getting approval to play for the fall of 2020 made things feel a bit more like an ordinary hockey season. It was awesome. SJHL concludes virtual showcase
The SJHL held its virtual showcase over the weekend.
The event saw players from the league inserted into the video game NHL 21. Games were then simulated and when the dust settled, the Global Ag Risk Solutions squad came out on top in the championship contest.
“It was kind of a distraction for some people that miss junior hockey,” said Benny Walchuk, who is the radio broadcaster for the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers. “It was nice to hear some of those names that we’ve been accustomed to the first part of this year and the last couple years in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. It was good exposure – lots of hits on social media.”
