The cause behind the sudden surge in infections remains unknown.
But epidemiologist Eric Chow - who has been studying the state s syphilis epidemic - told 9new.com.au more sexual health clinics were needed in the affected areas to help prevent the outbreak from spreading. Sexual health services need to be scaled up in those areas, he said. Public health messaging about how STIs are transmitted, also symptoms, awareness and recognition is important.

Scientists will use genomic sequencing for the first time to track fast-moving syphilis outbreaks infiltrating Melbourneâs outer suburbs, as doctors warn immediate intervention is needed to contain an evolving epidemic of the sexually transmitted disease.
Doctors at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital are also reporting a 20-fold increase in people presenting with syphilis-related eye infections.
There has been a rise in syphilis cases in Victoria.
A rising number of Victorians are also being admitted to the hospital with delayed diagnosis of ocular syphilis and some are being left with permanent vision loss.

Stealthing, the act of sneakily removing a condom during sex, is set to become a crime in the ACT – and not a second too soon.
As many as one in three women and one in five queer men have been a victim of stealthing, according to one Australian study, with female sex workers particularly at risk.

CANBERRA Liberals Leader Elizabeth Lee will today (April 22) present a bill to the ACT Legislative Assembly to explicitly outlaw the heinous act of stealthing – the non-consensual removal of a condom during sex.
Tabling of the
Crimes (Stealthing) Amendment Bill 2021 comes after a recent joint study by the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre and Monash University found that one in three women and nearly one in five men in Australia have reported being victims of stealthing.
Ms Lee described these statistics as “staggering”, saying: “Stealthing risks both physical and psychological health, including the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and disease, unplanned pregnancies, depression, anxiety and in some cases post-traumatic stress disorder.
