When strangers at parties find out I’m a journalist they immediately ask me to name my favourite interviewee. The conversation invariably goes something like this.
“The one magnificent, inspirational person who stands out to me for both personal and much, much wider reasons is Melinda –”.
“OMG Melinda Messenger? Seriously?”
“No,” I explain, “Although I did once interview her about National Fish and Chips week. I’m talking about Melinda Gates.”
I wait a few beats and watch the puzzlement before clarifying: “Melinda Gates. Wife of Bill? Bill Gates.”
Where will Melinda Gates go from here?

Former model and TV presenter Melinda Messenger is best known for fronting a string of popular series, including
Fort Boyard,
Cowboy Builders and
Cowboy Traders. In recent years, she has retrained as a psychotherapist. Now 50, she lives in Berkshire with her three children, Morgan, 20, Flynn, 18 and Evie, 17.
How did your childhood influence your attitude to money?
My parents divorced when I was around five and money was tight for my mum, who later trained as a secretary. She had around £40 a week to look after three children and herself.
