Coming in with a 1.16 per cent increase the lowest since amalgamation the Chatham-Kent police budget was approved during the opening night of deliberations on Jan. 27.
The budget is for $32.3 million.

Last year’s police budget boasted a 1.75 per cent hike, the same as the previous year. The latest increase has a 0.23 per cent impact on the overall proposed tax increase.

Facing many pressures, including those not unique to Chatham-Kent this year, council will be looking at a challenging budget process in January.
Municipal staff also say it will be difficult to come in with a tax freeze without service reductions.

“Since the August meeting there have been several decisions counter to a zero-per-cent target with no decreases in service levels desired by council,” stated a report presented at the Dec. 14 meeting.
“Without scaling back services delivered to the residents of Chatham-Kent, a zero-per-cent budget is not possible.”
