Morgan Spehar is the only student in the State of Ohio to receive prestigious award
Ohio University’s Morgan Spehar, from Auburn, Ohio, has been selected as a Udall Scholar for the 2021-22 academic year, highlighting her work in environmental journalism. She is the sole recipient in the state of Ohio from any Ohio university or college.
Spehar, who will be a senior in the upcoming academic year, is an Honors Tutorial College student majoring in journalism and environmental studies. She is among 55 students from 42 colleges and universities across the United States selected as the 2021 Udall Scholars.

Several students from Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs won awards for their work at the 2021 Virtual Student Expo.
Olivia Wolff, Master of Science in Environmental Studies candidate, won first prize for the Sustainability Award and the Community Engagement Award for her presentation “Diverting Ohio University’s Construction and Demolition Debris from Landfills.” Her presentation focused on diverting Ohio University construction and demolition debris from Ohio landfills through material donations to ReStore. ReStore, part of Habitat for Humanity, is a second-hand home improvement store that accepts material donations and sells them at a lower cost. Ohio University students learn the skills to bring innovative ideas to life through the University Innovation Fellowship.
The University Innovation Fellows program is run through Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. The goal of the national program is to ensure that students gain the attitudes, skills and knowledge to contribute to the economy.
Ohio University’s 2020 Cohort of University Innovation Fellows are Melissa Damico, Ishan Matta and Laura Ndoigo. The goal of this year’s student cohort is to implement improvements to the online learning environment for all levels of ability and access. The students conducted an institution-wide survey regarding innovation opportunities and spoke with many students and faculty.
