Wildfires in West prompt new evacuations as they spread through region

(NEW YORK) Evacuation orders have been issued in several regions in the West due to spreading wildfires. Thousands of residents in Northern California and Montana were ordered to flee their homes as both new and existing wildfires neared neighborhoods. Currently, about 90 large wildfires are burning in 12 states in the West much of which is suffering from severe drought conditions. The Dixie Fire, which has been burning near the Feather River Canyon in Northern California for weeks, prompted new evacuation orders in Greenville. The Dixie Fire the largest in the state has been through more than 253,000 acres and is just 35% contained. The extreme fire behavior is being exacerbated by hot and dry conditions with gusty winds are persisting in the area, making it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze.

Take a breather and see 'Wild & Free' at the HRAC – The Lion's Roar

The Hammond Regional Arts Center is currently hosting the Wild & Free Exhibition until May 21, featuring three Louisiana-based artists.  HRAC’s online preview for this exhibition stated that each featured artist is known for bringing colorful life into their artworks without limitations. The three artists, April Hammock, Denise Hopkins and Kimberly Meadowlark, bring colorful pieces of art to the Hammond scene. Tara Bennett, the center’s media coordinator, along with HRAC Board Member Jordan Kenning, chose these artists when told about the idea for this exhibit.  “These artists came to mind when Executive Director Melissa Griffin pitched the concept of an exhibition that incorporated a ‘wildly colorful exhibition to usher in spring.’ Griffin and Kenning worked together to produce an exhibition that would celebrate the expressive use of color,” Bennett stated.

(AP) - South Carolina’s governor is recognizing residents who help out forecasters by collecting and sharing weather data from across the state. Gov. Henry McMaster has declared the week starting Sunday as “South Carolina Citizen Weather Observer Week.” The South Carolina Climatology Office said residents can join the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, which is also called CoCoRaHS and share how much rain falls. The shared weather observations have helped forecasts and emergency officials keep people safe during the 2015 floods as well as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018, said Melissa Griffin, the South Carolina coordinator for the program.
