Chatham County Commissioners greenlighted the county’s fiscal year 2022 budget on Friday. The approval follows a contentious meeting last month that resulted in the board failing to adopt the budget by the July 1 deadline. The commission also voted to make Friday’s approval retroactive to July 1 in order to ensure that contracts and county employee merit raises were backdated.  The budget approval delay was fueled by commissioner concerns over a request from the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office to reallocate funds from the jail and Sheriff’s office to fund four assistant district attorney positions. The total ask from the DA’s office was $280,000.
