Franklin County Visitors Bureau spotlights Women s History in Vision, Voices, and the VOTE, a new exhibit, at the 11/30 Visitors Center.
The long struggle for women’s suffrage culminated on August 18, 1920 with ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. It was a step forward for civil rights in America. Vision, Voices and the VOTE tells the stories of centuries of Franklin County women. Visitors can become part of the multi-year installation by taking a selfie and adding it to the exhibit. Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center invites the public to add their selfie to the African American History Is American History installation.
Inspired by the Martin Luther King quote: “The time is always right to do what is right,” Franklin County Visitors Bureau is sponsoring an essay contest. The contest is open to young and old. Doing the right thing shaped African American history, women’s history, and all of American history.
Dear Dr. Scribblerbuck:
During the 1990s, I was a docent at James Buchananâs home, Wheatland. I was taught exactly what was the prescribed story of his life to tell to tourists. They especially stressed that Buchanan was never a slave owner and abhorred the institution. I repeated this story to many visitors.
I have recently read that he indeed bought two enslaved people and âkeptâ them for the years it took for them to work off the cost of buying them. Calling them indentured servants does not change that this was indeed slavery and I am so sorry that I was a part of the myth of James Buchanan at Wheatland.
