Mesa development: more jobs, more road projects

The bad news: Mesa development continues. City leaders have their eyes on both the jobs and challenges new projects are bringing to Mesa.  At a recent Economic Development Board meeting, City Manager Chris Brady said the city’s economic development “is mostly based upon infrastructure and the workforce.” While development means jobs, it is also accelerating at a pace that is “pushing us to our limits.” The intense growth in the eastern part of the city can deflect from needed improvements elsewhere, he noted. And, he stressed the fairness factor: “It is an important balancing act to meet the demands of developers who don’t want to spend money on infrastructure,” Brady said. “We are trying to encourage that they need to be playing a part in this too.”

El Paso County commissioners approve 2021 road improvement list

El Paso County commissioners approve 2021 road improvement list EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) Nearly 377 miles of roads will be improved as part of the annual maintenance program recently approved by county commissioners. The road work will be allocated to dust reduction (227 lane miles), gravel road repair (29 miles), paving (53 miles) and chip sealing (66 miles). Chip sealing is a process in which a loosely-compacted layer of aggregate (small particles containing sand, gravel, crushed stone, recycled concrete, etc.) is spread on a layer of asphalt. Chip sealing is a less expensive way to maintain roads that are in good condition, and is often used on rural roads having lower traffic volumes.

Short-term pain, long-term gain on Mahoning Ave | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 4, 2021 We can already hear the assorted moans, groans, gripes and snipes among irritable motorists attempting to wend their way along Mahoning Avenue in Austintown and Youngstown in the coming months and years. To be sure, inconvenience will reign supreme as work begins this spring on a series of $8 million-plus repaving and improvement projects along the major artery of Austintown and the city’s West Side. That work will necessitate lane closures, traffic slowdowns and orange barrel-dodging before one of the largest and most significant road-improvement projects in recent years reaches its finish line. Those nuisances, however, add up to little more than a classic case of short-term pain, long-term gain. The $5 million Austintown project, coupled with multimillion-dollar projects from 2022 to 2025 on the city’s share of the highway, represent a concrete investment in the future of the city’s West Side and its western neighbor.
