2020 saw the likes of the Venice Film Festival, Raindance, Cannes and more switch to online programming, embracing virtual reality (VR) tracks through platforms like the Museum of Other Realities and VRChat. SXSW Online 2021 – which begins next week – had to follow suit as well, with SXSW Online XR providing a showcase of immersive content and industry discussion.
For SXSW Online XR the film festival has turned to VRChat to host its immersive programming, with the platform offering artist representations of Congress Avenue and the Red River Cultural District for users to explore. In these two locations, guests will find the Paramount Theatre, The Contemporary and other spots where live sessions, meetups, special events, 360° videos from the Virtual Cinema program, and 2D video feeds of SXSW Online 2021 programming will be available.

Starting March 12, the Amity Street movie house will begin showing “Nomadland” and “Minari” on two screens.
Executive Director Yasmin Chin Eisenhauer said the time since the theater closed to the general public on March 12 of last year has given the cinema management a chance to make upgrades to the theater spaces. Safety improvements include plexiglass barriers at all concession stands, new easier to sanitize seating and a new HVAC system to increase fresh air intake and virus-blocking UV filters and ionizers. Initially, the theaters will operate with significantly reduced capacity.
Colorado Dragon Boat, a Denver-based group celebrating and promoting Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities across the state, had a tough 2020.
The nonprofit was able to pull off last year s edition of the Colorado Dragon Boat Film Festival. The annual event, which was launched in 2016, took place just before the cultural scene came to a screeching halt over COVID-19. But over the summer, the signature Colorado Dragon Boat Festival which started in 2001, later giving rise to the film fest and other related activities was canceled and replaced with a virtual event. While the online offering wasn t as thrilling as the races on Sloan s Lake the most comprehensive in the country the organization was happy to have a chance to connect with its community, which desperately needed something to rally around.
