Malta’s foreign minister Evarist Bartolo has delivered a jab at European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber, accusing him of being absent on scandals that have dogged German financial institutions and other companies.
Bartolo, who last week accused the European Parliament of ‘picking on small Malta’ by being used for partisan reasons, once again accused the Nationalist Party MEPs of being selective in their international criticism.

Foreign minister Evarist Bartolo has railed against a resolution approved by over 600 MEPs, including Labour’s socialist colleagues, on Malta’s state of rule of law after the island avoided a much-feared greylisting from the Council of Europe’s Moneyval.
“There are people who are pleased at the senseless resolution against Malta that was pushed by the PN in the European Parliament, rather than at Malta passing its Moneyval test, which safeguards thousands of Matese jobs,” he said on Facebook.

A bitterly-fought resolution condemning the state of the rule of law in Malta passed through the European Parliament this morning in a landslide vote – with 635 votes in favour, 46 against and 12 abstentions.
The resolution, which had seen stiff opposition from Labour MEPs, sailed through this morning’s plenary session as had been expected, since it had already garnered the support of all political groups, even the Socialists and Democrats, at Committee stage last week.

Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba this morning came out guns blazing ahead of next week’s European Parliament vote on the hotly-disputed resolution on the rule of law in Malta and the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Accusing the European Parliament as wanting to serve as judge, jury and executioner by entertaining such a resolution while court proceedings on the subject matter are ongoing in Malta, Agius Saliba said he appealed to his fellow Socialists and Democrats at a meeting of the group yesterday to not accept such “political games”.
