Cybersecurity researchers fear Chinese telecom hack Hackers waged a campaign from 2017 to 2021, in some cases exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp s Exchange servers to access telecom firms internal systems
Chinese hacking groups have compromised global telecommunications companies by stealing phone records and location data, cybersecurity researchers said.
The hacking groups waged a campaign from 2017 to 2021, in some cases exploiting security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp’s Exchange servers to gain access to telecommunication companies’ internal systems, according to a new report published on Tuesday by US-based security firm Cybereason Inc.

HONG KONG: Chinese cyberespionage groups have been targeting major telecoms providers across Southeast Asia, according to a new report, following accusations from the US and other countries that China hacked into Microsoft Exchange email servers.
Boston-based security firm Cybereason said in a report on Tuesday that it had identified three clusters of intrusions into the region s telecoms industry since at least 2017, with links to threat actors that were suspected to be operating on behalf of Chinese state interests .

Hacking groups with ties to China have been identified by US-based cyber security solutions vendor Cybereason as being behind a series of cyber activity in the ASEAN region.
The findings come after the Cybereason Nocturnus and Incident Response teams proactively hunted for various threat actors trying to leverage similar techniques to those used in the Hafnium attacks targeting Microsoft Exchange vulnerabilities earlier this year.

Chinese state-backed hacking groups compromised at least five global telecommunications companies and stole phone records and location data, according to cybersecurity researchers.
The hacking groups waged a campaign across Southeast Asia from 2017 to 2021, in some cases exploiting security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp’s Exchange servers to gain access to telecommunication companies’ internal systems, according to a new report published Tuesday by US-based security firm Cybereason Inc.
Lior Div, the chief executive officer of Cybereason, said the hackers had obtained “the holy grail of espionage”, by gaining total control of the telecommunication networks they penetrated. Cybereason named the groups Soft Cell, Naikon and Group-3390.
