Inside this issue we look at artists and curators who are initiating change, and bringing important and critical works to light. Weâre keen to survey these shows and bring the widest possible points of access to the works.Â
To begin, we look back on the legacy of Palm Springs Modernism â how it has proliferated throughout culture from the 1940s to the present-day, from Hockeyâs pool paintings to the most popular photograph in the Getty Archives. In a sequence of self-portraits, shot throughout the pandemic, Russian-born Kristina Varaksina) sits against stark white backdrops, shrouded by materials â with subtle variations suggestive of time passing. In one image, plastic packaging obscures the artistâs face. In another, painted words sit sharply on the skin, manifestations of doubt. Â

Michelle Maguire is a visual artist, a gatherer of things, and an observer of how the shapes and textures of certain objects, bars of soap and chocolate, brushes and sandpapers, a mop, a dodgeball, complement one another within a space. Kelsey McClellan is a photographer whose images are made of bright, intentional light, stirring prisms capable of instantly clearing cob-webbed minds. When painter Kristin Texeira puts oil paint to canvas, all at once she warmly summons the abstract and oft-elusive shapes of nostalgia, music, feeling.
