Metro Council unanimously approves Oracle deal

The Metro Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the economic impact plan for the planned Oracle tech campus and surrounding River North infrastructure, including an extension of Cleveland Street that will allow vehicular, bike and pedestrian connectivity between River North and East Nashville. Projected to cost $1.2 billion, the Oracle development and public infrastructure could bring up to 1.2 million square feet of office space to the Cumberland River’s East Bank. For that, the Silicon Valley corporation has committed to a $175 million investment recreational spaces, streets, stormwater management and a bike and pedestrian bridge connecting River North to Germantown. “Today’s Oracle vote demonstrates Metro’s commitment to make the right deals for Nashville,” Mayor John Cooper said when the 40-0 resolution vote passed.

Capital Partners is seeking to undertake the project with a key address (among others) of 441 Humphreys St. According to documents submitted to the Metro Planning Department, and as the Post reported in January, the development will include eight new buildings sitting on 13 parcels. A.J. Capital, which owns the nearby May Hosiery complex, owns some of the parcels within the 6.13-acre property. However, Metro Councilmember Colby Sledge, in whose District 17 the property sits, told the Post Tuesday he received an email from the company president Friday morning noting A.J. Capital would no longer be negotiating with the neighborhood organization, South Nashville Action People (SNAP).

Mother of man killed by MNPD officer alleged racism in department The Metro Council on Tuesday agreed to pay $2.25 million to the family of Daniel Hambrick, a Black man shot by a white police officer in 2018. The city’s lawyers and the Hambrick family reached a settlement agreement earlier this month, with the payment set to conclude Hambrick’s mother Vickie’s civil suit filed against the city and Nashville police officer Andrew Delke. Delke still faces murder charges for the slaying, though the trial has been delayed due to COVID-19. The lawsuit asked for $30 million in damages, and Nashville lawyers advised that the settlement would help avoid lengthy and costly litigation and a potential adverse outcome.
