Metcalfe Park Community Bridges (MPCB), a neighborhood organization that services Metcalfe Park residents, truly embodies the meaning of community. Melody McCurtis, the deputy director of priorities and lead organizer of the organization, explains that everything they do is based off of the input and direction of their residents. Whether that be surveys they conduct going door to door or following the advice given by board members that live in the neighborhood, the community speaks for their needs and the organization listens.
A leader in her community and in the organization, Melody McCurtis grew up in Metcalfe Park. She started as an organizer and canvasser with MPCB and eventually grew into the role she holds now. Her mother, Danell Cross, was one of the five founding residents that started the organization back in 2012. Mason St Ventures acquired the property from Sentinel Suites LLC, an Illinois-based investment group led by
Doug Young. The Illinois firm paid Milwaukee investor
Max Dermond $1.53 million in 2018 for the property. It was billed as 50% vacant at the time.
Now it’s 70% vacant.
Alex Zank, would turn the building into apartments.
“It’s a really cool building, a lot of history behind it, and it’s in a prime location right downtown,” Gollatz told Zank. “You don’t see many buildings like that come up for sale at a semi-affordable price point.” The property is assessed for $1.58 million.
The conversion could result in 30 apartments in the 30,848-square-foot building. Gollatz said his group is now talking with architects and contractors.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez is partnering with Milwaukee-based Next Door to donate books through his Blocks for Books program.
During the 2020-21 season, Lopez will donate $200 to Next Door for every block he tallies, with a minimum commitment of $25,000. The donation will go toward the purchase of books for kids in the Milwaukee community.

First Impressions: This doc, filmed from 2017-2020, “follows Minneapolis’ first female police chief Janeé Harteau, as she works to reform the Minneapolis Police Department by getting rid of bad cops, retraining the rest, diversifying the ranks and promoting women who statistically use less force than their male counterparts into every rank of leadership.” The doc will also chronicle the journey of four women working in Harteau’s department, including the moment Chief Harteu resigns (following the high-profile case of police officer Mohamed Noor shooting and killing bride-to-be Justine Diamond) and is replaced by a male chief who only picks men as his “top brass.”
