As if witnessing a miracle, a foamy, slow-moving mass of chocolate liquid carrying sticks, logs, branches and trash made its way down the sandy river channel. Dogs and kids jumped into the water, while families hugged and enjoyed the sunset and the return of water to our community. Witnessing the return of the Rio Grande in Las Cruces has become an annual tradition, one in which we celebrate the coming weeks of swimming, fishing, floating, picnics and carnes asadas by the river. But it shouldn’t be this way.
