Mexico is second only to Brazil as the world s most populous Catholic country.
But a recent survey showed that only 77.7% of Mexicans now identify as Catholics. That s the lowest rate ever recorded.
Over the past two decades, the percentage of Catholics in this vibrant Latin American country has continued to decline.

Over the weekend, I met with a couple of Mexican friends passing through Dallas. They were on their way to visit their daughter in Houston.
To say the least, they painted a dire picture of COVID in Mexico, from access to the vaccine to hospital beds.
Mexico s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported on Wednesday, Jan. 27, that 44.9 percent more people died of covid-related issues from January through August of 2020 than initially reported by the Mexican government, adding another layer of discord to the nation s dismal handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

JUAREZ, Mexico (Border report) Mexicans are getting older, having fewer children and have doubts about religion, according to recently released Mexico 2020 census data.
But they also embrace personal technology at unprecedented speeds and love entertainment streaming services just as much as their parents love portable radios or the movies.
“We see a significant increase in the percentage of homes with mobile phones, internet services, computers and tablets. Likewise, homes now have fewer (standard) televisions, radios and landlines, ”said Julio Alfonso Santaella, president of Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Information (INEGI).
The variation from the 2020 UMA is +3.15%.
The UMA (which stands for “Unidad de Medida y Actualización”) serves as the basis to calculate the payments, obligations or penalties that are owed to the government, whether under federal or state law. Its updated value is published on an annual basis.
The UMA was adopted as an economic reference in 2016. Before this, the minimum wage was used to calculate payment obligations and sanctions. Any reference to the minimum wage that is maintained in the legislation or the legal system and that is not related to employment relationships or payments derived from employment relationships, will be understood as a reference to the UMA, which will be the new value that must be considered for the payment of obligations according to federal and state laws.
