President Joe Biden’s planned moratorium of oil and gas leasing will buy time for a broad review of whether and how fossil fuels should be extracted from lands under the U.S. government’s control.
The result could have a profound impact on an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of Americans by determining what access it will have on a 10th of the nation’s land and almost all of its coastal waters.
U.S. chamber of commerce condemns federal leasing ban By Craig Fleming on 1/27/2021
WASHINGTON D.C. In response to the Biden Administrationâs announcement that the Department of Interior will ban any oil and natural gas authorizations on federal lands and waters, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute President Marty Durbin said, âThere is never a good time to disrupt domestic energy production, especially during a pandemic, but doing so at a time when our nation is in need of economic recovery is especially counter-productive and short-sighted. Halting production wonât halt demand for the energy we need, and the products we depend on. Bidenâs Pause On New Oil And Gas Leasing âWill Not Significantly Impactâ The Industry
The executive order, part of a suite of climate actions, could set the stage for bigger policies down the road.
By Alexander C. Kaufman and Chris D Angelo
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden is set to temporarily suspend all new oil and gas leasing on federal lands pending an administrative review, part of an early blitz of executive orders seeking to undo former President Donald Trumpâs denialist legacy on climate.Â
Although the move is a first step toward Bidenâs campaign promise to ban new drilling leases, it is more of a political statement, experts say, than a policy change. The pause will have little immediate effect on an industry that stockpiled federal leases and permits to drill on public lands and waters in the final weeks of the Trump administration.Â
