Let’s start with the most important part of the history behind Cinco de Mayo. Contrary to popular belief,
it is not Mexican Independence Day. It’s a day that has become a symbolic holiday for Americans celebrating what they imagine to be the spirit of Mexico and Mexicans. It’s also a day that has exacerbated stereotypes of Mexicans and Mexican culture for too long. It’s because of the latter reason that we choose to #CelebrateMexico within our space in the mango industry to help educate where we can, hopefully clearing up some misconceptions along the way.

Commemorating the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo celebrations in North America are typically observed with plenty of Mexican food, drinks, and in non-pandemic times, parades and parties. Although we’ll have to take a rain cheque on the latter, it’s still possible to ring in the day with good cheer and delicious flavours.
In 1983, upon completing my engineering education in the United States, I took a software engineering job in California s Silicon Valley. I immediately got myself a new five-speed Nissan Sentra that preferred going downhill rather than uphill but took me thirty miles on a gallon of petrol. Having gained freedom I had only dreamed of before, I spent my weekends exploring the region with my camera.
My interest in photography gravitated towards street photography and I quickly discovered that nearby San Francisco was a goldmine for that. The reason was simple. There was a different festival in the streets of San Francisco almost every month, organized by the city s ethnic and political groups. Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese and Italians all had their own festivals, colourful and exciting, with parades on the street, music, food and drinks and sparkling
Cinco de Mayo is coming up next week, so get ready to grab a taco and find a fiesta.
But the holiday is much more than a chance to have a drink and don a sombrero. It s an occasion to celebrate Mexican heritage as well as a ragtag group of soldiers fighting off foreigners who would oppress them. Sound familiar?
When is Cinco de Mayo?
It s all in the name. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for Fifth of May. This year, the festive holiday falls on Wednesday.
What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate?
Contrary to what many believe, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. (That would be Sept. 16, honoring the date when Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1810.)
