History & hysteria behind Cinco de Mayo - FreshFruitPortal com

History & hysteria behind Cinco de Mayo April 30 , 2021 By Nissa Pierson, of Crespo Organic Mangoes Let’s start with the most important part of the history behind Cinco de Mayo. Contrary to popular belief,  it is not Mexican Independence Day. It’s a day that has become a symbolic holiday for Americans celebrating what they imagine to be the spirit of Mexico and Mexicans. It’s also a day that has exacerbated stereotypes of Mexicans and Mexican culture for too long.  It’s because of the latter reason that we choose to #CelebrateMexico within our space in the mango industry to help educate where we can, hopefully clearing up some misconceptions along the way.

The history of Cinco de Mayo explained for Columbus-area residents

Cinco de Mayo is coming up next week, so get ready to grab a taco and find a fiesta. But the holiday is much more than a chance to have a drink and don a sombrero. It s an occasion to celebrate Mexican heritage as well as a ragtag group of soldiers fighting off foreigners who would oppress them. Sound familiar? When is Cinco de Mayo? It s all in the name. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for Fifth of May. This year, the festive holiday falls on Wednesday. What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? Contrary to what many believe, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. (That would be Sept. 16, honoring the date when Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1810.)
